Writer and traveler František Mandát accepted our invitation for a discussion on North Korea. Students learned information about life in a totalitarian country, where there is no opposition and any information outside the state-controlled media. Tourists are under constant surveillance by secret service personnel and eavesdropped at every location. It is impossible to communicate with the locals, even the ice cream is bought at the stall by the local guide. Even tourists have to bow to the numerous statues of the "Eternal President" Kim Il-Sung. Locals even organize weddings there or make their wishes. There is an incredibly sophisticated propaganda in the country, thanks to which the local residents are absolutely unaware of the environment in which they live. They may be poor, but despite our assumptions they live happy lives. Ordinary citizens have no chance at all to access independent sources of information. During the discussion, the students had dozens of interesting questions and could even see a ticket to the Pyongyang subway, or North Korean banknotes, which are normally not accessible to tourists at all and we would find only a few pieces of them in the whole of the Czech Republic.
